The first freight trains on the Thessaloniki-Athens route were launched to transport containers of goods that have been at ports and stations since the beginning of the month following the railway accident at the end of February, in which dozens of passengers died.

Train sets move at low speed, travel along the line where the electronic traffic control system works.

The Ministry of Transport has increased the number of staff at stations, as well as the number of train drivers.

The railway company agrees with the railwaymen that freight trains will run only on routes with complete security.

Cargo removal has begun.

The first trains left in Greece after the severe train accident

From the international directions, freight trains transport containers with goods only in the direction of Sofia and Skopje, reports BNR.

For now, the unions do not allow the movement of passenger trains.

According to railway operators, there are sections where there is still a risk for passengers.

The railway company says it is working hard to install security systems and passenger trains are expected to start running from the beginning of next month.
