The director of the UN nuclear regulator is visiting the Russian-controlled Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in southeastern Ukraine today.

The visit is part of attempts to prevent the risk of a nuclear accident, Reuters reported.

Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), arrived at Europe's largest nuclear power plant to see the situation up close, an agency spokesman said.

Moscow and Kiev have repeatedly accused each other of shelling the nuclear plant area over the past year.

Grossi is pushing for a security agreement between Ukraine and Russia to protect the facility.

The Director of the IAEA visited the Ukrainian city of Dnipro on Monday and met with President Volodymyr Zelensky.

He said in an interview that his attempt to broker a deal to protect the nuclear power plant was still ongoing and that he was considering his proposals to make progress.

Grossi described the situation at the plant as "very dangerous" and very unstable.

The IAEA has had its own observers at the Zaporozhye plant since last year, when Grossi visited and when fears of a potential nuclear accident grew.
