The US supports the creation of a special tribunal for the crime of "aggression" against Ukraine, said the special ambassador in the bureau for global criminal justice and spokesperson of the US State Department Beth van Schaak, BTA reports.

The agency notes that this is the first time how Washington will support Ukraine's insistence on seeking responsibility for the Russian invasion.

"We believe that this special tribunal should be established within the Ukrainian domestic judicial system, as this will provide the most direct route to the establishment of a new tribunal and give the maximum chance of seeking significant accountability," she said.

In Russia, they reminded what the USA will do if its citizen ends up with an arrest warrant from the ICC

Schaack also expressed Washington's support for such a tribunal, noting that this model was chosen after analyzing several others.

"This model, an internationalized national court, will facilitate broader cross-regional support and demonstrate Ukrainian leadership to ensure accountability for the crime of aggression," she said in a statement to the Catholic University of America in Washington.

According to Schaak, the tribunal could be located somewhere in Europe, at least initially, to "reinforce Ukraine's desired European orientation."

Ukraine, the EU and the Netherlands have publicly supported the idea of a special tribunal.

Russia, which describes its actions in Ukraine as a "special military operation", has denied allegations of war crimes, including the deliberate targeting of Ukrainian civilians, thousands of whom have died.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this month, charging him with war crimes over the illegal deportation of hundreds of children from Ukraine.

The ICC said there were sufficient grounds to believe that Putin bears personal criminal responsibility.
