Evaluating the statement of Russian President

Vladimir Putin

about the intention to deploy nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus, the Council of the People's Republic of Belarus saw in this intention "the complete dependence of

Lukashenka

on the Kremlin" and the fixation of the gap "between the interests of Lukashenka and the aspirations of the Belarusian people, who expressed it back in 1990 in the Declaration on State Sovereignty the intention to achieve a nuclear-free status of the country".

In a statement, the Council of the Belarusian People's Republic draws attention to the fact that the probable "presence of Russian nuclear warheads creates a real threat both for neighboring countries - Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia, as well as for the Belarusian people themselves, as it makes the country's territory a practically guaranteed target for a nuclear attack."

"Belarus, while maintaining formal signs of independence, is de facto under the political, economic and cultural occupation of Moscow, under which Belarusians as a nation are threatened with extinction.

By deploying nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus, Putin is putting the Belarusian people at risk of their physical existence, the statement says.

It is also reminded that "at the time of maximum freedom, in the early 1990s, Belarusians voluntarily gave up nuclear weapons.

At the same time, the signatories of the Budapest Memorandum (1994) declared guarantees of the sovereignty of Belarus."

"In this situation, the Council of the BNR calls on the signatory states of the Budapest Memorandum, as well as the neighbors of Belarus, to initiate consideration of the issue of the Russian military occupation in collusion with the usurper Lukashenka at the UN General Assembly Session.

Belarus should be freed from the rule of two dictators as soon as possible, whose alliance poses a real threat to the people of Eastern Europe," the Council of the People's Republic of Belarus said in a statement.

  • On December 5, 1994, a document on security guarantees was signed in connection with the accession of Ukraine to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which was called the "Budapest Memorandum".

  • According to him, the USA, Great Britain and Russia undertook to respect the independence, sovereignty and existing borders of Ukraine, to refrain from threats or the use of force and economic pressure, to seek immediate actions of the UN Security Council in order to provide assistance to Ukraine if it becomes a victim of an act of aggression or threat of aggression with the use of nuclear weapons.

  • The same obligations apply to Belarus and Kazakhstan.
