[Instant News/Comprehensive Report] Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced today (28th) that general elections will be held on May 21st.

Mitsotakis' party has long led the polls, but support has slipped following the worst train accident in Greek history.

According to the Associated Press report, on February 28, a passenger train carrying more than 350 people collided with a freight train on the same track near the city of Larissa in central Greece, killing 57 people. The worst train accident in Greek history.

The disaster sparked popular outrage, with the current governing NDP shrinking its lead over the main leftist rival, Syriza, by between half and four percentage points.

"This country needs clear skies ... and we will continue to do good work courageously and compromise less," Mitsotakis told a televised cabinet meeting.

The late former Greek Prime Minister Konstantinos

Constantine Mitsotakis' 55-year-old son, Constantine Mitsotakis, has been popular during his four-year tenure, but his reputation has recently been shattered for allegedly instructing Greece's state security service to wiretap politicians and the government's failure to protect the rail network. Safe, hit hard.
