At least three children have died as a result of a shooting at a private Christian school in the American city of Nashville, Tennessee.

Many people were injured.

Their number was not specified.

Local police said the suspect was killed by officers who responded to the shooting, but did not say whether it was a man or a woman.

According to media reports, three children with gunshot wounds were admitted to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

The private Christian "Covenant School" was founded in 2001 by the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in Nashville, where about 200 children from preschool to sixth grade are educated, according to the school's website.

An active shooter training program was held at the school last year.
