The European Union is preparing new sanctions against Belarus and will adjust them to whether Minsk will accept Russian nuclear weapons, a spokesman for the European Commission said today.

He noted that the new measures, the discussion of which has been going on for a month, will depend on whether the Belarusian side confirms the messages of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

We have not seen confirmation from Belarus that this is envisaged.

If it happens, of course there will be consequences, the spokesman pointed out.

We are ready for any development, he added.

According to him, the EU is waiting to see if the authorities in Minsk, which it defines as an accomplice of Russia in the war in Ukraine, will reject Putin's statements.

The spokesman noted that the deployment of Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus would create an additional threat to European security.

In response to a question, he did not reject the possibility that the issue of the war in Ukraine would be discussed during the planned visit of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to China.

The spokesman pointed out that Von der Leyen had already expressed concern about the borderless friendship agreement between Moscow and Beijing.

He confirmed that von der Leyen will travel to China together with French President Emmanuel Macron.
