A BUILDING for storing medical supplies and expired medicines opposite the Geita Regional Referral Hospital in Nyanza Street in Geita has been gutted by fire, the cause of which is unknown.

Acting Regional Police Commander of Geita, Berthaneema Mlay has confirmed the occurrence of the accident and explained that the incident happened today March 27, 2023 around seven in the afternoon.

He said that after receiving information about the accident, the police force and the fire and rescue force arrived at the scene on time and tried to put out the fire that continued due to the drugs that were present.

"We were able to communicate with our stakeholders who are GGML, who arrived quickly, and managed to extinguish the fire.

There are no harm to humans, but only the building has burned.

"But the assessment or the value of the burnt items is not yet known, let's wait for the parties to make an assessment, we will be able to know what valuable items have been burnt," he said.

Acting Commander of the Fire and Rescue Service in Geita region, Edward Lukuba has said that they received the information around seven o'clock in the afternoon and went to the scene to reduce the effects of the fire.

"We found that the fire was big, but we managed to reduce the intensity of the fire, and were able to control the situation of the fire so that it could not spread to other areas.

"This building that caught fire is a building owned by the Geita City Council, but it has been used as a warehouse for storing medical equipment and medicines that have expired," he said.
