Poland has detained a foreign citizen on charges of espionage for Russia, the prosecutor's office said today, quoted by Reuters and BTA.

The war in Ukraine further worsened the strained relations between Poland and Russia.

Warsaw says it is often the target of Russian espionage and disinformation.

The prosecutor's office in the Polish city of Gdansk said the suspect was detained on March 21.

According to her, he "acted for the benefit of Russian intelligence by acquiring and gathering information... about important infrastructure in Pomeranian Voivodeship and Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship and on the activities of services and bodies responsible for security."

If convicted, the man could face up to 10 years in prison.

Polish authorities recently uncovered a Russian spy network that was preparing acts of sabotage and monitoring rail routes to Ukraine.
