A woman from the Canadian province of Alberta, who has been donating blood for free for almost six decades, has set a world record for the largest amount of blood donated by a representative of the fairer sex, reports BTA.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, 80-year-old Josephine Michalak started donating blood in 1965. She was 22 years old at the time.

The woman donated a total of 203 units of blood (one unit is just under half a liter).

According to Mikaluk, her sister convinced her to donate blood for the first time.

The hospital in Silistra issued an appeal for blood donation

"I decided to join her and that's how it all started," she says.

Josephine Mikaluk, whose blood type is the widely sought-after zero positive, says she enjoys the fact that she is helping other people.

"I feel like I have something to give," she adds, adding, "I can share it with people who need it."
