  • "It is not right to get this punishment for defaming a human being"

  • P Chidambaram targets the Center on the issue of Rahul Gandhi

  • Said- many things have been done in haste

New Delhi:

P Chidambaram, who was a minister in the UPA government, has given a big statement regarding senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's membership in Parliament.

In a special conversation with NDTV, he said that even Usain Bold would be surprised to see the speed with which the trial court acted in this case and Rahul Gandhi was later disqualified.

I think this is the harshest punishment in such cases till date.

P Chidambaram told NDTV why Piyush Goyal or the government is not trying to explain it.

When has anyone been sentenced to two years till date for defaming someone?

This shows that you can silence a member of the opposition by resorting to a law.

Significantly, almost all the opposition parties are standing with the Congress on the issue of cancellation of Rahul Gandhi's Parliament membership. Trinamool's sudden entry took place on Monday in protest against this decision, which surprised everyone.

It is considered one of the rare achievements of opposition unity, as the Trinamool Congress had said that it would maintain an equal distance from the BJP and the Congress.

Today, a major strategy meeting was held at Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge's office, in which TMC was represented by Prasun Banerjee and Jawahar Sarkar.

It is being told that in this meeting, the strategy of the opposition on the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from the Parliament was discussed.

The party said that the opposition should unite, even as they are distancing themselves from the united front on other issues.

Congress MPs wore black clothes to protest against Rahul Gandhi's disqualification.

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi, led by K Chandrasekhar Rao, the Congress rival in Telangana, joined the "black cloth" protest with the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray).

After Rahul Gandhi's "not Savarkar" jibe at the BJP over his demand for an apology, Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday warned him that downplaying Savarkar would create a "rift" in the opposition alliance.
