Armenia and Turkey plan to open border crossings between the two countries for the first time in three decades and to do so on a permanent basis.

The information was confirmed by officials in Armenia.

Initially, the land border will be opened only for diplomats and citizens of third countries before the beginning of the tourist season, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia,

Ararat Mirzayan

.

There is already a direct air connection between Armenia and Turkey.

Turkey unilaterally closed the land border in 1993 in support of Azerbaijan amid the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The closing of the border then caused serious economic problems for Armenia.

Now the relations between Yerevan and Istanbul are gradually improving.
