In Kyiv, 16 more streets, alleys, avenues and boulevards, whose names are related to Russia and the Soviet past, were renamed this week.

Tymish Martynenko-Kushlyanskyi, an expert and public figure in the field of culture and national memory, told about the new names of streets and avenues on Facebook.

"The approved proposals cover a number of very iconic and massive city objects, the renaming of which was long awaited by Kyivans. And the list of immortalized personalities includes a number of fundamental figures of Ukrainian and European history and culture," he writes.

One of the largest thoroughfares in the city -

Perova Boulevard

 - acquired the name of the historical area through which it runs, and changed its type from "boulevard" (which is no longer there) to "prospect".

So, now we have Voskresenskyi Prospekt, which continues the good Kyiv tradition of perpetuating the names of our localities in toponymy objects.

Finally, Ukrainian cosmonauts - the first cosmonaut of independent Ukraine Leonid Kadenyuk and the first Ukrainian cosmonaut Pavlo Popovych - were duly honored.

Together, they symbolize the outstanding contribution of Ukrainians to the development of the space industry and the development of outer space - although this is, of course, the topic of a separate post.

So,

Yuriy Gagarin Avenue became Leonid Kadenyuk Avenue,

 and

Cosmonaut Volkov Street became Cosmonaut Popovych Street.

Commemoration of both has been actively discussed in Kyiv for at least the last five years.

Another Kyiv avenue with a completely propagandistic name -

Liberators - was named after Heorhiy Narbut

, an outstanding Ukrainian artist, graphic artist, author of the first Ukrainian banknotes, state symbols of Ukraine during the time of Pavel Skoropadsky and one of the rectors of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts.

Maryna Tsvetayeva Street

also changed its name in honor of the outstanding Ukrainian and European artist

Oleksandra Ekster

from Kyiv .

Unfortunately, this name was for a long time forgotten by the Ukrainians on the one hand, and annexed by the Russians on the other.

Ekster - one of the founders and most outstanding figures of the Ukrainian and European avant-garde finally returned home to Kyiv, which she often dreamed of while living in exile in Paris.

Pyatigorska Street

in Shyrmi became

Alpiyska Street

, as requested by its residents.

The street and the alley of Moskvina

, which are right there in Shyrma, became, respectively,

the street and the alley of Ivan Firtsak

, also known by the nicknames Kroton and Ivan Sil - an outstanding Ukrainian Transcarpathian wrestler and strongman.

In the 20th century, Ukraine gave the world two heroes who became legends during their lifetime - Ivan Piddubny and Ivan Firtsak.

From now on, both are engraved in the symbolic space of the Ukrainian capital.

Tagilska Street

became the street of prominent Ukrainian dissident

Oksana Meshko

, who during her lifetime was called the "Cossack mother" and "legend of the dissident movement."

Oksana Yakivna lived simply on Verboloznaya Street, next to Tagilska Street.

Khokhlov Family Street,

not far from the Taras Shevchenko KNU Institute of Journalism, is now the street named after the Welsh journalist

Gareth Jones

, who was one of the first to tell the world the truth about the Holodomor of 1932-1933.

Marshalska Street

changed its name in honor of the outstanding Kyiv artist, ceramist

Halyna Sevruk

.

By the way, in addition to her outstanding creative work, Halyna Sylvestrivna is also a representative of one of the most legendary and ancient Kyivan families - the Hryhorovych-Barsky family, which has lived here since at least the time of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi.

Dobrolyubova Street

in Zvirynka became the street of

Volodymyr Korotkevich

, an outstanding Belarusian writer, whose formation and a large part of his life are connected with Kyiv.

There is probably no figure who unites Ukrainian and Belarusian cultures more than Korotkevich, who was sincerely in love with Kyiv.

The area in which Korotkevich Street appeared is directly connected with the life and work of the outstanding writer.

And, of course, it is impossible not to mention that

Leo Tolstoy Street and Square

have disappeared in Kyiv .

Instead of

Tolstoy Street

in the capital, our outstanding statesman

Hetman Pavel Skoropadsky

was finally honored in a dignified and proper way .

And instead of

Leo Tolstoy Square,

there will be

Ukrainian Heroes Square

, which will immortalize the fighters for the independence of Ukraine of all times.

PACKAGE #7, iconic.
