EU leaders have welcomed a plan to provide Ukraine with 1 million artillery pieces over the next 12 months to help counter a Russian invasion.

What does this mean for Ukraine in military terms, if we take as a basis the fact that Ukraine fires 5,000 to 6,000 artillery munitions per day on average, security expert Ivan Varchenko told on the air of the FREEDOM TV channel.

we measure our effectiveness of artillery work, first of all, not in the number, not in how many shots were fired, but in how effective the shots were.

Therefore, we are now increasingly moving away from the post-Soviet artillery heritage, from what we have left from previous times," the expert explained.

Varchenko noted that Ukraine is moving to NATO weapons standards, including the 155th caliber, which is the most effective in today's conditions.

"Also, we work with smaller calibers and rocket artillery. Ukrainian forces use about 100,000 shells per month. Today's artillery, which Ukraine can use, is much more effective than the one in Russia. Yes, Ukraine also uses them. But we we understand that the further we go, the more we move to the 155 calibers. We really need the process that we are observing now. We understand that the European industry was not ready to provide such intensity of fighting that we see in Ukraine ", he added.

According to the expert, many countries are now faced with a challenge — what they planned for a year turns out to be used in one day in Ukraine.

"Therefore, it was necessary to intensify this production, and we see now a very serious approach. 2 billion euros is just the beginning. Then the process will continue and we will have this million projectiles by 2023, and this will allow us to provide both offensive and defensive operations," - he summarized.

We will remind you that the other day, the ministers of defense and foreign affairs of the EU agreed on a plan for the joint purchase of ammunition.

It envisages

providing Ukraine with 1 million shells over the next 12 months.

Thus, 18 countries have joined the project of the European Defense Agency to collect and place orders in industry.
