During an operation in one of the slums of Rio de Janeiro to arrest suspected drug traffickers, the police got into a shootout with armed individuals, as a result of which 13 people died, the Associated Press reported.
Police said the operation was linked to drug traffickers originating from the northern state of Pará, where more than 40 police officers have been killed since 2021.
Police in Rio de Janeiro said all the people who died in the operation were criminals.
They added that two suspects were arrested and two women were injured.
Television footage showed an intense exchange of gunfire in the Salgueiro favela, BTA writes.

Rio police said they would provide more information about the operation later.
O Globo newspaper reported that the suspected head of a drug trafficking organization based in Pará was killed in the raid, which police did not confirm.
