[Reporter Wu Zhengting/Kinmen Report] Avian influenza is raging. The Council of Agriculture of the Executive Yuan strengthened the biological control of chicken farms, and started spreading quicklime on the ground of chicken farms and the surface of chicken manure for disinfection to reduce potential pathogens.

The Animal and Plant Epidemic Prevention Office of Kinmen County said today that it has distributed the lime to 26 large chicken farms, and more than 80% of them have completed disinfection. It is expected that the disinfection will be completed before the end of the month.

The County Epidemic Prevention Office pointed out that not only the Agricultural Committee initiated nationwide disinfection of poultry farms with quicklime, but also because the first case of H9N2 subtype low-pathogenic avian influenza virus was found in Kinmen on March 16. The case of "poultry-to-human transmission" made the epidemic prevention unit dare not ignore it, and immediately adopted high-standard handling on the same day, culling 4,551 broiler chickens; other chicken farms were also strictly regulated.

Lin Zhengdao, director of the Kinmen Epidemic Prevention Institute, said that there are 17 broiler farms and 9 layer hen farms in Kinmen. In recent days, according to the requirements of the Council of Agriculture, quicklime has been distributed to each chicken farm and supervised by the chicken farms to disinfect the ground and the surface of chicken manure. .

Lin Zhengdao said that the quicklime is spread inside and outside the chicken house, the surrounding environment and passages, and the quicklime absorbs water vapor and then transforms into mature lime for sterilization, so as to reduce the number of pathogens in the poultry house environment; in addition, when quicklime is used, it will produce strong alkali, Strong alkali is corrosive, and poultry farmers must wear rubber gloves and rubber shoes when using it to avoid skin damage to operators.

Wen Shuicheng, director-general of the Kinmen County Farmers Association, said that Kinmen’s local egg supply is already sufficient. The major fresh food supermarkets have eggs from Taiwan’s main island. The supply of other non-governmental eggs is still stable, and the price reflects production costs. Eggs have little effect.
