Tomorrow, March 25, in the Orthodox calendar,

is the day of memory of Reverend Theophan the Confessor

.

He was born in Constantinople and belonged to a noble family, because his father was the prefect of the Aegean Islands.

He was orphaned at an early age, so the Byzantine Emperor Constantine V Kopronym took up the education of the young man.

Soon after the marriage, Feofan became a monk, because he and his wife lived in a chaste marriage.

At first he founded a monastery near Cyzicus, but in general he built three monasteries during his life, in one of which he was abbot.

In 787, he took part in the Second Nicene Council, during which he advocated icon worship.

Wrote his famous work "Chronology", in which he described the events that happened.

During the reign of Emperor Leo, iconoclasm gained strength.

Feofan refused to be a like-minded ruler, for which he was punished with torture and imprisonment for two years.

Then Theophanes was exiled to the island of Samothrace.

He died there in 817.
