Officials from the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) visited the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK) today.

At the Institute's headquarters, the visitors met with specialists from that center and authorities from the Cuban Ministry of Public Health (Minsap), as part of compliance with the

Memorandum of Understanding signed between Minsap and HHS in 2016.

On the Cuban side, the meeting was chaired by Dr. Carilda Peña García, Vice Minister of Health, who was also accompanied by Cuban medical science professionals.

The US delegation, which was attended by scientists and specialists from that country, was headed by the director of the NIH/NIAID Office of Global Research, Ms. Joyelle Kalei Dominique.

As a result of the scientific meeting,

the parties agreed to continue working on the implementation of the Memorandum and promote technical exchanges related to research on arboviral diseases, experiences of COVID-19 and other related topics.

The US delegation also met with managers and scientists from the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) of the BioCubaFarma group, where issues of mutual interest were discussed.
