There is no way we can do without it, at least for now, nuclear physicist Prof. Georgi Kaschiev said in the program "Face to Face" on BTV on the occasion of the decision adopted yesterday by the caretaker government for a derogation for the Kozloduy NPP for Russian spare parts.

It had to be established what would be done with some of the signed contracts, he added.

Many of these spare parts could be replaced with others, but this is a lengthy and difficult matter to implement, Prof. Kaschiev pointed out.

Bulgaria will buy parts for the Kozloduy NPP from Russia

According to him, the replacement of Russian nuclear fuel with Westinghouse fuel poses certain risks in the first, transitional years.

Confirmation should be obtained that these risks are foreseeable.

We have to make sure that there will be no processes that lead to the reactor shells being disturbed.

Risks must be reduced to acceptable limits.

Safety comes first, the nuclear physicist added.
