Listen to the news

A Belarusian journalist who worked for the Russian daily "Komsomolskaya Pravda" was sentenced today to three years in prison for an article that mentioned the Belarusian secret service KGB, Agence France-Presse reported, citing Belarusian media.

Gennady Mozheyko was found guilty of insulting President Alexander Lukashenko, as well as inciting enmity on a social basis, the Belarusian news agency BelTA reported.

In 2021, Mozheyko published an article about a shootout between KGB officers and an IT specialist who was killed in the shootout.

In his article, the journalist quotes a classmate of the murdered man, who presents the deceased in a positive light.

This led the authorities to accuse Mojejko of "attempting to exonerate a criminal".

In October 2021, Komsomolskaya Pravda office in Minsk was closed.

According to the Belarusian police, Mozheyko was arrested after being extradited from Russia, where he went with the intention of leaving there for a third country, BTA notes.
