Denmark's Queen Margrethe II, whose 50-year reign has made her Europe's longest-reigning monarch, is expected to resume most of her official engagements on her 83rd birthday next month, the royal palace said today. BTA.

Margrethe underwent back surgery on February 22 and "her recovery is going well, but in the coming months she will still be unable to undertake some of her key duties," the palace said.

Some of her official engagements are likely to be undertaken by other members of the royal family, most notably her eldest son and heir to the throne Prince Frederik and his wife Princess Mary.

On her birthday, Margrethe intends to step out onto the balcony of Amalienborg Palace - the home of the Danish royal family in central Copenhagen - to greet the assembled majority of her supporters.

It will be her first appearance on the balcony of her home in the capital in five years, as from 2019 to 2022 she celebrated her birthdays at the palace in Denmark's second largest city, Aarhus.

Margrethe celebrated her birthdays in 2020 and 2021 in a small circle due to covid restrictions on mass events.

According to Denmark's constitution, Margrethe is the head of state with no political powers.

She ascended the throne on 15 January 1972 after the death of her father.
