"This year we will complete the modernization of Moscow's anti-missile defense system," Shoigu was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.

According to him, two new air defense divisions will be trained and equipped with new generation S-350 surface-to-air missile systems.

At the same time, we will complete the construction of 621 military infrastructures for the needs of the Air Force, added the Russian minister, quoted by BTA.

The Russian capital has never been directly affected by attacks since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine.

In February, however, a Ukrainian drone crashed about 100 kilometers from Moscow without causing any damage.

In January, footage broadcast on social media showed the installation in Moscow of Pantsir S-1 systems designed to intercept, in particular, cruise and ballistic missiles.

In recent months, drone attacks on Russian territory and in annexed Crimea have increased, and several Russian air bases, hundreds of kilometers from the front, have been hit.

The Russian navy said today it had "repelled" a drone attack on the port city of Sevastopol, in Crimea, in which there were no casualties.

Shoigu also said that a division of Bastion coastal anti-missile systems had been deployed by Russia to Paramushir, one of the Kuril Islands, some of which Japan has territorial claims to, according to Reuters.
