The Ministry of the Interior of North Macedonia announced that an organized escape through a dug tunnel from the prison in Skopje "Idrizovo" was prevented, BTA reported.

The action was held jointly with the security services and the guards at the place of punishment.

The information received was that a group of at least 8 prisoners, convicted of serious crimes and serving sentences ranging from 10 years to life imprisonment, were preparing to escape from "Idrizovo" by digging a tunnel.

The tunnel, about 40 m long, was about 1 meter deep and about 80 centimeters in diameter, secured with support beams and bricks.

In it were found several plastic baskets with ropes tied to them, which were used to remove the excavated earth, as well as an electric cable with a light bulb for lighting the tunnel.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that the previous director of the prison has been relieved of his post, something the government has announced has been in the works for a long time.

Major General Zoran Jovanovski was appointed director.

He has a rich professional career, primarily in the Ministry of the Interior.

The new head of "Idrizovo" went through training at a police academy in Louisiana, as well as in Germany, the USA, Northern Ireland, Turkey, England," announced the Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Dimitar Kovacevski.
