Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced on Sunday the end of the truce with the Clan del Golfo, the country's largest criminal organization, Reuters reported.

The reason for the decision is an attack with firearms on police forces by the group, BTA reported.

"I have ordered the armed forces to resume all military operations against the Clan del Golfo. We will not allow them to continue to sow insecurity and terror among communities," Petro tweeted.

A little later, he published a second message saying: "The assault with rifles on police forces by the "Clan del Golfo" violates the ceasefire. (...) The armed forces must take action immediately against the mafia organization."

Reuters does not yet have details about the attack.

The truce with Clan del Golfo, also known as the Gaitanista Self-Defense Forces, was part of efforts to end the group's involvement in Colombia's internal conflict, which has so far claimed the lives of at least 450,000 people.

Gustavo Petro's government has asked parliament to approve a law that provides for reduced sentences for surrendered members of criminal gangs in return for ceasing illegal activity and paying compensation to victims.
