[Central News Agency] Kristiansen, a 15-year-old girl in Sweden, is too young to get a car driver's license, but she has been roaming around in a stylish BMW car, because teenagers can drive any modified car on the road here, but the speed cannot exceed golf cart.

An almost century-old Swedish law that originally applied to agricultural vehicles allowed children over the age of 15 to drive without a full car licence, as long as the vehicle was modified to set a top speed of 30 kilometers per hour.

The cars and trucks have become popular in recent years, and authorities are now concerned about an increase in road accidents.

"I got it a year ago as a birthday present for me," Evelina Christiansen, standing in front of her dark blue BMW 5 Series in the driveway of her home in the southern suburbs of Stockholm, proudly told AFP. This gift is a special reward for her achievements at school.

While teenagers in other countries can only ride motorcycles until they get a car license, young people in Sweden can drive almost any vehicle with a set maximum speed limit.

In Stockholm's affluent suburbs, it's not uncommon to see young children driving Porsche Cayennes by themselves.

This type of vehicle must have a warning triangle at the back according to regulations, indicating that the vehicle is moving slowly, and must also be equipped with a hitch ball seat for connecting a trailer.

The car's back seats also had to be removed so they could only carry the driver and one passenger.

Drivers only need to have a light vehicle license, available from age 15, or a tractor license, available from age 16.

Sweden is known for its road safety and strict drink-driving rules, but the system is surprisingly lax.
