During Xi Jinping's conversation with Russian dictator Putin, the topic of Ukraine will come up and China should start offering something.

To what extent China wants and can really influence the events in Ukraine and whether it has the desire to get involved and actively play for one of the parties, political scientist Volodymyr Fesenko told on the air 1+1 as part of the telethon.

"I think that China will not throw off its mask. Duplicity in the position of China, at least for the moment and in the near future, will be preserved. China has its own political partnership, even a military partnership with Russia. But during the year of the Russian war, let's put it this way, they cautiously almost did not help. The Russians even took offense at this, because they are "allies," Fesenko believes.

He emphasized that China will act exclusively in its own interests.

"I think that what they have publicly stated about wanting to be a peacemaker is real, but of course in the Chinese style. They had an agreement about easing tension and conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran. China has a positive case here and something like that. he wants to make between Russia and Ukraine," says the political scientist.

According to Fesenko, China feels that the war between Russia and Ukraine is approaching its climax, so they need to step in.

After all, Beijing claims global leadership.

"If the war comes to an end and they begin to negotiate around the final stage of the war, to agree on what terms and what the content of peace will be, not only Turkey will be in the game, but also the United States, the EU. How about without China? China claims global leadership. It should be in the game and that's why it is now included in it," the expert explained.

How China will act

According to the political scientist, China will act "according to the situation".

If necessary, Russia will be helped to some extent so that it does not lose, because it is not in the interests of China.

Fesenko explained that China views the current war in the context of a confrontation with the United States.

Therefore, Beijing will not help Ukraine.

"But it is not important for us how they will talk about us among themselves. I think that most of the serious conversations will remain behind the scenes and we will find out about it later. What is important is what the conversation between Xi and Zelensky will be about. We need to prepare for this. Some American analysts are already advising us on how to do it. I also think that this will be only the beginning of active contacts. And we should use it," says the political scientist.

Fesenko emphasized that it is important for Ukraine that China does not completely switch over to Russia's side.

"Let him maintain his formal neutrality. The main thing is that he does not completely side with Russia, that he does not help with weapons and that economic aid is also limited. Because China can also use the weakening of Russia to its advantage. It is already doing it," he concluded. expert.
