Tsai Ing-wen pointed out that this is the first time a congressional group has visited Taiwan during this session, and I believe it will bring closer exchanges between Taiwan and the UK. In recent years, the British Parliament has become more and more supportive of Taiwan. The House of Representatives held a debate on "Taiwan-UK Friendship and Cooperation" initiated by Stewart. Last November, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the British Parliament also visited Taiwan, fully demonstrating the importance it attaches to Taiwan.
Tsai: Looking forward to deepening exchanges and cooperation between Taiwan and Britain
Tsai Ing-wen expressed his thanks to Stewart for his friendship with Taiwan, and we are grateful for the support of all good friends for Taiwan.
Thanks to the United Kingdom for reaffirming the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait through the G7 and other multilateral and bilateral platforms many times since 2021. We look forward to greater efforts between Taiwan and the United Kingdom in maintaining regional peace or in the development of various fields Many exchanges and cooperation.
Tsai Ing-wen said that the United Kingdom is a key partner in promoting the offshore wind power industry in Taiwan. More than 30 British companies have set up operating offices in Taiwan. It is believed that apart from offshore wind power, Taiwan and the United Kingdom will be more important in terms of supply chain resilience, network security, medical and biotechnology. Industry and other fields can also complement each other and create a win-win situation. I wish the UK a smooth accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). I also hope that the UK will uphold high standards and support Taiwan's application for membership, so that Taiwan and the UK can continue to deepen their partnership.
Stewart: Taiwan is more democratic than Britain
Stewart said that half of the members of the delegation are from the Conservative Party and half from the Labor Party, but they are all staunch friends of Taiwan. Taiwan and the United Kingdom have many things in common. The United Kingdom is an island outside the European continent, and Taiwan is also in the Islands outside the continent of Asia, although the population of Taiwan is about half that of the United Kingdom, our attitudes and values we believe in are similar.
Stewart also agrees that Taiwan is more democratic than the United Kingdom. In the latest Democracy Index released by The Economist, the United Kingdom ranks 18th in the world, while Taiwan ranks 10th. It is obvious that Taiwan has flourished and experienced great changes in the past 30 years. However, the changes in the United Kingdom over the past 800 years may not be as good as Taiwan. Taiwan is a beacon of democracy and a model for the world.
