A man has died and another woman is missing after an avalanche hit the mountains near the town of Courmayeur in the Aosta Valley on Sunday, ANSA said.

The Italian telegraph agency quoted local emergency services as saying.

The victims are 25 years old.

Rescuers found two other skiers alive.

They are in good condition.

The rescued skiers told emergency services about the other two members of their group, the body of one of whom was found.

They tried to resuscitate him but were unsuccessful.

The group swept away by the avalanche is from Sweden.

The rescue operation will continue on Monday.

Authorities say the area is popular with extreme snowboarders.
