Turkey is trying to implement the project for a gas trading center (gas hub) quickly, President Recep Erdogan said today

Recep Tayyip Erdogan - Turkish politician and prime minister.

Born on February 26, 1954 in Istanbul. Graduated during a speech in Balkesir district, broadcast by TRT TV channel, BTA reports.

"We are acting quickly to turn our country into a hub for natural gas extraction, transportation and trading. We are developing both our gas pipelines and gas storage facilities," he said.

Erdogan said the earthquakes in Turkey had slightly disrupted plans to connect Black Sea gas to the national gas transmission system.

"But despite some delay due to the earthquake, we will soon connect Black Sea gas to the system," he said.

Black Sea gas deliveries to Turkey will begin by the end of April

On Saturday, the head of Turkey's energy ministry, Fatih Dönmez, said the country would be able to export about 40 billion cubic meters of natural gas through the planned international gas hub in Istanbul.

He also noted that from the end of April it is planned to start supplying gas to the domestic market from the Sakaria field in the Black Sea.

In October 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the idea of creating a hub on Turkish territory, where the lost volume of Nord Stream transit would be redirected.

He explained that the idea is to build another pipeline system and create a hub in Turkey through which to supply gas to third countries, especially Europe, if they show interest.

Turkey has responded positively to this initiative and said that much of the infrastructure for the gas trading hub in Istanbul has been built.

Erdogan also said that the commissioning of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant will be an important contribution to Turkey's electricity supply.

"In the coming months, we will put into operation the first unit of the Akkuyu NPP. With the commissioning of all units, this plant will make a very important contribution to the uninterrupted and balanced electricity supply of our country," he said.

According to the president, a significant amount of electricity is produced in Turkey from solar energy, and wind energy projects are currently being developed.

"The development of the gas industry, hydropower and nuclear power are part of green energy and contribute to its implementation. The path we have taken so far shows that we are preparing to become one of the 10 largest producers of electricity from renewable sources in the world," Erdogan said.

Akkuyu is the first nuclear power plant to be built in Turkey.

The project is implemented on the basis of the intergovernmental cooperation agreement signed between Russia and Turkey on May 12, 2010. The project envisages the construction of four power units with reactors developed in Russia.

The capacity of each power unit of the NPP will be 1,200 megawatts.

Once commissioned and operating at full capacity, the Akkuyu NPP will produce around 35 billion kilowatt hours per year.

The plant is designed to meet up to 10% of Turkey's electricity needs.

The construction of the first power unit of the NPP is scheduled to be completed this year.
