According to the report, in the scenario of a tactical nuclear attack, a ballistic missile carried a simulated nuclear warhead in the exercise and hit a target at an altitude of 800 meters after flying 800 kilometers.

North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile off its east coast yesterday, South Korea and Japan reported, the latest in a string of missile tests by Pyongyang in recent weeks.

The U.S. and South Korea launched the "Freedom Shield" joint military exercise earlier this month.

North Korea called the U.S.-South Korea joint military exercises a rehearsal for its aggression and responded fiercely.

In a separate report, KCNA said more than 1.4 million North Koreans had volunteered or re-enlisted to fight against Seoul and Washington.

That number jumped from 800,000 just two days earlier.
