An Israeli man was seriously injured today in an alleged attack by Palestinians in the West Bank city of Huwara, paramedics said, BTA reports.

His wife, who was in the car when she was shot at, was taken to hospital due to traumatic shock, the Magen David Adom emergency service said.

There were also three children in the car, Israeli media reported.

The attacker allegedly fired about 20 shots at the vehicle.

Israeli security forces reportedly captured the suspect after a short chase.

The car was fired upon in the small town of Huwara, near where two Israeli brothers were killed last month in an attack by a Palestinian gunman.

The attack sparked severe rioting by Israeli settlers who set houses, shops and cars on fire.

Several Palestinian residents were injured.

Israel's far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who is also responsible for Israel's controversial settlement policy in the West Bank, has demanded that the state "wipe out" Huvara.

He later retracted those statements.

A national road runs through Huwara, which is used daily by many Israeli settlers in the northern part of the West Bank.

The security situation in Israel and the Palestinian territories has worsened in recent months.

Since the beginning of the year, 85 Palestinians have died in violent clashes, and 13 Israelis and a Ukrainian woman have been killed in Palestinian attacks.

There are fears that there will be more violence during the upcoming Muslim month of Ramadan, which begins this week.
