A large earthquake has shaken the country of Ecuador and Peru and killed 14 people, destroyed houses and buildings, and sent some citizens into great fear.

The earthquake killed 13 people in Ecuador, while one person was reported dead in Peru.

Authorities in Ecuador also reported that at least 126 people were injured.

The US Geological Survey reported a magnitude 6.7 earthquake on Saturday in the Guayas coastal region of Ecuador.

The quake was about 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of the country's second-largest city, Guayaquil, which anchors a metro area of ​​more than three million people.

The weather authorities in the country have stated that the earthquake did not seem likely to cause a tsunami.
