The Russian authorities are likely preparing to promote a wider conscription to meet their military needs.

The British Ministry of Defense reported this on Twitter.

As noted in the intelligence, on March 13, 2023, deputies of the Russian Duma introduced a bill on changing the age category of conscription for military service to men aged 21-30 from the current 18-27 years.

The law is likely to be adopted and enter into force in January 2024.

"Russia continues to officially bar conscripts from participating in operations in Ukraine, although at least hundreds are likely to have served due to administrative confusion or after being forced to sign contracts," the report said.

In addition, Russian authorities are likely to change the age bracket to increase the size of the military, ensuring that students will eventually be forced to serve.

"Even if Russia continues to refrain from using conscripts in the war, the additional conscripts will free up most of the professional soldiers to fight," added the intelligence.
