New York:

Former US President Donald Trump said he expected to be "caught" on Tuesday for allegedly hush moneying a porn star ahead of the 2016 election.

He called on his supporters to protest.

Citing a "leak" from the Manhattan District Attorney's office, Trump wrote on his Truth social platform on Saturday morning: "The leading Republican candidate and former President of the United States will be arrested on Tuesday of next week. Resist, Take our country."

The focus of the investigation is a $130,000 payment to stop Stormy Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, before the 2016 election.

The intention behind doing this was to prevent her from saying publicly that she had a relationship with Trump many years ago.

Prosecutors are considering whether to charge Trump in the case.

If the Manhattan district attorney indicts Trump, the 76-year-old would become the first former president to be charged with a crime.

Trump's attorney told CNBC Friday evening that his client would surrender to face criminal charges if indicted by a Manhattan grand jury.

Trump has denied having an affair with Daniels.
