At least 12 people died as a result of the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that occurred in the south of Ecuador on Saturday.

APA reports that this was reported by the press service of the country's president.

"At present, 12 people have died (11 in El Oro province and one in Asuai province). There are wounded people, they are being treated in hospitals," the press service's Twitter page said.

It should be noted that the epicenter of the natural disaster was located 17 km southwest of the city of Naranhal.

The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 85 km.
