Rocks mixed with plastic are found on an island in Brazil.

Scientists studying the geology of the Brazilian volcanic island of Trinidad have found molten plastic intermingled with the rocks there, according to the Reuters news agency.

The researchers who made the find describe them as "terrifying."

They see these plastic rocks as proof of the growing influence of humans on Earth's geological cycles.

“This is new and terrifying at the same time, because the contamination has reached geology,” said Fernanda Avelar Santos, a geologist at the Federal University of Paraná.

Human influence on the environment seems to be the cause of this phenomenon.

Located about 1,140 kilometers from the state of Espíritu Santo, in the southeast of Brazil, the volcanic island of Trindade is a very important territory worldwide for the conservation of green turtles (Chelonia mydas).

Every year thousands of turtles come to the remote island to lay their eggs and keep their species alive.

The site is so important for the conservation of marine life that the only ones on the island are members of the Brazilian navy who protect the nesting turtles.

Environmental pollution causes worrying phenomena in the environment.

Santos and other researchers from the Federal University of Paraná carried out chemical tests on the rocks that they have dubbed "plastigglomerates."

This, because the rocks are formed by a mixture of sedimentary granules and other remains joined by plastic.

The scientists pointed out that with the study they sought to determine what type of plastics make up the rocks.

The results identified that contamination is the main source of plastiglomerated rocks.
