Ukraine has said it has begun producing components for nuclear fuel rods. This is the first step towards independence of the country from Russian nuclear fuel.
Ukraine no longer buys and will not buy Russian nuclear fuel, announced the president of the state company "Energoatom".
Last year, the country signed a contract with the American company "Westinghouse" for the supply of nuclear fuel for all its nuclear power plants.
Kiev's next goal is to start producing its own nuclear fuel.
The head of the NRA called to be careful with the sanctions against Russia in nuclear energy
"Our common goal with the American partners is to produce several types of fuel as quickly as possible to push Russia out of the European nuclear fuel market," German Galushenko, Ukraine's energy minister, was quoted as saying by BNT.
Until recently, Ukraine received services and fuel for its nuclear power plants from Russia.
However, the war put an end to these trade relations.
"Unfortunately, many European countries depend on Russian nuclear fuel. Ukraine is among the first countries to diversify supplies, and this gives us the opportunity to refuse Russian fuel," German Galushenko added.
The country plans to start producing its own fuel in 2026.
This, of course, does not include the enrichment of uranium, which Ukraine will import, but not from Russia.
