We are talking about the death of people as a result of the use of violence, as well as torture and inhumane treatment of prisoners.

This is stated in the report of the OHCHR on the situation in Belarus, published today in Geneva.

This is reported by DW.

The document records alleged crimes committed in Belarus from May 2020 to December 2022, UN representative

Liz Trossell said.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights,

Volker Türk,

criticized impunity and the almost complete destruction of civil society and basic freedoms in Belarus.

"The government of Belarus owes its people an end to mass repressions and conducting an objective and transparent investigation in order to bring those responsible for flagrant violations to justice," Türk emphasized.

In the process of preparing the report, UN human rights defenders interviewed 207 victims and witnesses, and also studied more than 2,500 photographs, video recordings, medical and court documents.

The report documented violence against demonstrators, arbitrary detentions, sexual assaults and trials without adequate protection.

The Permanent Mission of Belarus to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva criticized the report.

"The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights continues to reproduce lies and slander against Belarus and its authorities," the mission statement said.

"The report serves as a tool for lobbying the anti-Belarusian agenda of Western countries in the UN and the Human Rights Council.

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights continues to protect those who failed to undermine the Belarusian state and illegally seize power in 2020, participating in mass riots, directing anti-government protests, inciting hatred in society, using violence and threats against representatives of law enforcement agencies, state officials, pro-state journalists", BELTA quotes the statement of the representation of Belarus at the UN.

It also says that some of those described in the report as "victims and witnesses" "have fled abroad and are now, under the direction of their sponsors, collecting "evidence of the regime's crimes" to fill such reports, which spread misinformation and lies in as a means of revenge and pressure on Belarus".

The discussion of the report in the UN Human Rights Council will take place on March 22.
