Passengers at four airports in Germany will face flight cancellations and delays today as workers walk off the job in the latest wave of strike action to hit Europe's biggest economy, DPA reported.

The strikes at Düsseldorf, Cologne/Bonn, Stuttgart and Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden airports will lead to the cancellation of 681 flights, the German Airports Association (GAL/ADV) said.

This will affect around 89,000 passengers.

The Verdi union called for the strikes as talks over pay in the aviation security sector remain unsuccessful and a dispute over public sector pay continues.

According to the union, the strike at Cologne/Bonn Airport will begin on Thursday evening due to the nature of the work shift.

In some areas, the strikes will not end until the early hours of Saturday morning.

Airport operators advised passengers to check their flight status with their airline or tour operator before heading to the airport.
