We all want the coal complex, mines and power plants to work as long as possible.

This is what the Minister of Energy Rosen Hristov told journalists

Rosen Hristov has a master's degree in international economic relations from Cal after meeting with management, unions and mine managers at the mines regarding green energy projects.

It became clear from his words that the ways to achieve this goal are different.

"We looked at several options. We all want to have a long-term strategy and a business plan, but that takes months of work. We all came together around the idea of having a territorial sustainability plan, i.e. an overall vision for the mine territory in the coming years and how it will be transformed This also takes resources and time, it will be done, but it cannot be done from today to tomorrow," he further explained.

During the meeting, the commitments that Bulgaria has to Brussels and Europe to achieve environmental goals and not only those that are in the Recovery and Sustainability Plan, but as a country as a whole, were also discussed.

"The aspiration is that we should live better, in a cleaner environment, and how can we achieve this without disrupting the standard of living and jobs in the region. This is achievable," added the energy minister.

From Hristov's words, it became clear that "several projects for investment and development in green technologies were presented, which would solve several of the problems of the "Mini Maritsa East" complex, including alternative incomes for both the enterprise and the workers. Among them is and the accelerated reclamation of terrains that represent an ecological danger and for which there are currently no resources to be carried out".

Europe must curb the coal sector if it wants to stop climate change

The minister also pointed out that "reclamation can be done in a variety of ways, we are trying to develop these areas because it is an asset. Currently, there is an idea to have photovoltaic plants around 4 gigawatts in the next 10 years on the territory of the mines on grounds that have gone out of service and are for reclamation".

According to him, reclamation of this type of terrain would cost from 3-4000 to 7-8000 BGN per hectare.

"This means people who are willing to give their roofs to build these photovoltaics and to receive rent or part of the profits of this enterprise4, he further explained.

The minister called for "an initiative and constructive ideas to be proposed. We must think about society as a whole", said Hristov, quoted by BTA.
