Yuriy Ignat, the spokesman of the Air Force Command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, emphasizes that Ukraine needs F-16
fighters
to protect against enemy missile attacks on cities and critical infrastructure.
He said this in an interview with Channel 24.
Ignat emphasized that the F-16 is the most common aircraft of its class in the world, among those needed by Ukraine.
According to him, such ships can become an important component of the general anti-aircraft defense.
After all, aircraft such as MiG and Su cannot effectively shoot down cruise missiles and drones.
Instead, the F-16 has a powerful radar that helps shoot down targets effectively.
"We need such planes primarily to protect against terrorist missile attacks by Russia on our cities and critical infrastructure," said the Air Force spokesman.
According to Ignat, F-16s are available in some countries that are currently being upgraded to even newer aircraft.
However, permission for the transfer of fighters must be given by Washington.
At most, the representative of the Air Force emphasized, this issue is not easy, and therefore requires a lot of time and approvals.
However, there are already some changes.
"Our partners are consistent. I think that Ukraine will have powerful wings that will help us save as many lives as possible and de-occupy our lands," he added.
Transfer of fighter jets to Ukraine
The Prime Minister of Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki, said the other day that Ukraine may receive MiG-29 fighters from his country in the coming weeks.
It is about the next 4-6 weeks.
There are currently 28 such aircraft in Poland.
Finland will consider
the possibility of providing its Hornet fighters to Ukraine.
However, the government of his country will be able to agree to it only after Helsinki receives the modern F-35s it previously ordered for itself.
Volodymyr Kopchak, head of the South Caucasian branch of the Center for Army, Conversion and Disarmament Research, says that
if the Armed Forces transfer F-16 armed with AMRAAM missiles with a range of 120 km
, then the fighters will be able to perform air defense functions.
