German Chancellor Olaf Scholz

Olaf Scholz is a German politician from the Social Democratic Party (GSDP).

From December 2021, today he honored the victims of the Holocaust together with the Israeli Prime Minister in Berlin, DPA reported.

The two statesmen visited the 17th track of the Grünewald station in West Berlin, from where in 1941 and 1942 about 10,000 Jews were transported by state railway trains to the concentration camps.

After visiting the memorial site, the two headed for a working lunch and general press conference at the chancellery.

Later today, Netanyahu will also meet with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Bellevue Palace, BTA reports.

More than 3,000 police officers were deployed in Berlin to guard the Israeli prime minister's visit to the German capital, which is expected to be accompanied by several demonstrations.

Hundreds of Israeli intellectuals called on Germany and Britain to cancel Netanyahu's visits

The protests are expected to be directed against justice reform, which Netanyahu's right-wing and religious-party government wants to fast-track.

The changes allow Israel's parliament to overturn Supreme Court rulings, which critics say threatens the separation of powers.

Many are eagerly waiting to see how Scholz will comment on the intentions of the controversial reform during Netanyahu's visit, DPA notes.

The chancellor's government wants to emphasize its support for Israel, as well as Germany's responsibility for the Holocaust.

But according to Gabriela Heinrich, an MP from Scholz's German Social Democratic Party, clear and frank messages are needed.

"It is precisely because of our sincere and deep friendship with Israel that German politicians are obliged to say nothing when it comes to concerns about the actions of the Israeli government," said Heinrich, who chairs the Israel friendship group in the German parliament.

הקריאות לשמיד את העם היהודי לא תמו.
