The authorities of the Ionian island of Zakynthos have decided that the Navagio beach - a popular tourist destination known for its shipwreck - will remain closed to tourists this summer due to fears of landslides, "Darik" reports.

The decision to ban access to Navagio Beach was recommended by a team of experts from the Organization for Antiseismic Planning and Protection (OASP) after visiting the site on March 8 as part of a regular safety reassessment.

The OASP team stated that there is a significant risk of landslides due to the erosion of the surrounding rocks;

"The safety of residents and visitors is above all and the decision was made taking into account the new scientific data of the OASP and its president, Professor Efthimios Lekas, given the high number of visitors to the area during the tourist season," said Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias.

Navagio has already been off-limits to locals and visitors since September last year after a 5.4 magnitude earthquake sent large chunks of rock falling from the surrounding cliffs into the bay.

Beach safety will be assessed twice a year.
