Considering that elderly people can see more clearly, the Transportation Bureau enlarges the signal lights for general pedestrians (provided by the city government)

[Reporter Su Jinfeng/Taichung Report] To create a pedestrian-friendly city, the Transportation Bureau of the Taichung City Government not only planned 29 "pedestrian-only time phases" that clearly separate vehicles from pedestrians, but also built shelter islands at intersections for pedestrians to stop for a while. The "Walk on the road, don't use your cell phone" warning sign will even enlarge the mirror of the "Little Green Man" to become a "Hulk", so that the elderly can see it more clearly and ensure a safe walking environment.

To build a barrier-free environment for people-oriented traffic and pedestrian environment in Taichung City, the Transportation Bureau has set up nearly 1,800 pedestrian countdown displays. Through the "little green men" who can run, people can control the time of crossing the road and reduce traffic accidents caused by rushing. Lights cause traffic accidents.

In addition, the Transportation Bureau established a total of 26 pedestrian-only crossings by the end of last year, and added 3 more this year to reach 29 pedestrian-only crossings. All have been set up, hoping to separate people and vehicles by time, reduce conflicts between people and vehicles, and improve safety.

The Bureau of Transportation pointed out that in order to facilitate the elderly to see the pedestrian-only signal lights at intersections, the original mirror surface showing the "little green man" who can run is enlarged to become a "hulk", and the countdown seconds of the traffic lights will also be played. Warning words such as "The seconds are not enough, please pass next time", "Don't lower your head when crossing the road", "Beware of turning cars", etc., let citizens feel the warm care of the traffic bureau when crossing the road.

Ye Zhaofu, director of the Transportation Bureau, said that the side length of the general pedestrian signal lights is 20 cm. In response to hospitals, business districts and important nodes, there are many elderly people coming and going. Considering their vision problems, the mirror surface of the pedestrian lights is specially enlarged to a side length of 30 cm. The running little green man is obviously easy to see, and even the general public finds the enlarged version of the little green man more eye-catching, which effectively improves the recognition of pedestrian signs.

In order to be friendly and improve the safety of pedestrians crossing the road, the Transportation Bureau emphasizes the implementation of "pedestrian priority", evaluates large intersections with central separation islands near business districts and schools, and sets up pedestrian shelter islands at intersections. If pedestrians cannot count on the green light Passing through the intersection, you can wait temporarily at the shelter island to reduce the time of exposure to the intersection and avoid the risk of getting caught in traffic.

The city government is making every effort to promote traffic safety for pedestrians, but modern people never leave their mobile phones, and it is common for "head-down people" to use their mobile phones for 10 seconds when crossing the road. A medium-sized business district and a school district set up a warning saying "Walk on the road, don't use your mobile phone" to ask people to cross the road carefully.

At intersections with heavy pedestrian traffic, the Transportation Bureau plans to clearly separate vehicles and pedestrians for pedestrian-only time phases (provided by the city government)
