Iran has reached an agreement to buy Su-35 fighter jets from Russia, amid deepening defense cooperation between the two countries.

Yahoo News writes about this with reference to the country's state media.

Iran's sanctioned air force is said to have an aging aircraft fleet and is struggling to purchase spare parts to maintain its warplanes.

Thus, Tehran stated that after the Iran-Iraq war of 1980-1988, they began to ask other countries to purchase fighter jets.

Iran later said that "Russia has announced that it is ready to sell them" after the expiration in October 2020 of restrictions on Iran's acquisition of conventional weapons under the UN Resolution.

We are talking about Su-35 fighters.

So, last year, Tehran began to establish strong ties with Moscow in various spheres, including the military.

Such information appeared against the background of Kyiv's statements about the transfer to Russia of drones from Iran, which the occupiers use for strikes on Ukraine.

In turn, the United States has expressed concern over the growing military cooperation between Iran and Russia, and Pentagon spokesman John Kirby warned in December 2022 that Russia would likely sell Iran its fighter jets.

At the time, Kirby claimed that Iranian pilots were training to fly warplanes in Russia, and that Tehran could receive the aircraft as early as 2023, which would "significantly strengthen Iran's air force compared to its regional neighbors."

Iran currently has mostly Soviet-era Russian MiG and Su fighters, as well as some Chinese aircraft, including the F-7.

Certain American F-4 and F-5 fighter jets, built before the Islamic Revolution of 1979, are also part of the Iranian fleet.

It will be recalled that earlier it became known that Russia exported 200 containers of weapons from Iran.

In general, this is about 100 million cartridges and 300 thousand projectiles.
