Afghanistan confirmed the death of 80 of its citizens in the shipwreck off the coast of Italy

The organization's Twitter message said the Emergency ship had been given permission to dock in the southeastern Italian port of Brindisi.

He is expected to arrive there on Friday.

The 12-metre inflatable boat "had serious structural problems and was filling with water", said Emanuele Nannini, a spokesman for the Emergency.

He added that the situation was too dangerous for the people in the boat and, moreover, the weather conditions had worsened.

Nanini compared the situation to the sinking of a migrant boat off the southern coast of Italy just over a week ago.

The confirmed death toll from the disaster reached 71 after rescuers found the body of a 3-year-old girl in the waters near the seaside resort of Stecato di Cutro.

About 80 people survived the incident, but others are still missing, DPA recalls.
