Peaceful protesters must be allowed to exercise their right to free assembly.

APA reports that this was said by the spokesman of the US State Department, Ned Price, when commenting on the police intervention against the protesters in front of the parliament building in Tbilisi.

He said that the United States is closely following the events in Georgia, and has received reports about the use of tear gas and other weapons against those protesting the draft law on "foreign agents".

"Our message to the government and people of Georgia is that the United States stands with those who peacefully exercise their universal rights, which are to freely assemble, raise their voice, speak freely, and hold their government accountable.

We will continue monitoring the situation in Georgia.

Our message is that peaceful protesters should be allowed to exercise their rights peacefully," said Ned Price at a briefing.
