The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen

Ursula von der Leyen - a German doctor and politician (born Albrecht). Ursula Gertrude Albrecht has announced today that railway experts will visit Athens on the occasion of the train accident in Greece last week, in which 57 people died, ANA-MPA reported.

"Rail safety is paramount," Von der Leyen said on Twitter after speaking with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis today

In Greece, railway workers continue their protests over the disaster, supported by the country's citizens.

They held up banners reading "Murderers", "It was not human error", "The victims on the trains will be vindicated with a struggle", "It was not an accident" etc.

They are protesting the state of the country's railway network.

They argue that safety standards have declined over the years and that the rail system needs modernization and public investment.

The head of the station in the city of Larissa was arrested.

The man's lawyer said today that his client was questioned for more than seven hours by investigators yesterday.

The station master has admitted to misadjusting the arrow, which led to the passenger train's head-on collision with the freight train near Larissa last Tuesday evening, his lawyer told Greek national broadcaster ERT.

If convicted of the manslaughter charges, he could face a sentence of 10 years to life in prison. 

This is the worst railway accident in the history of Greece.
