Agartala:

Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader and former chief minister Manik Sarkar on Saturday said the results of the Tripura assembly elections were "unexpected".

Also alleged that the elections were turned into a "tamasha".

Speaking to news agency ANI, the former Tripura CM said, "This is unexpected, as the government's performance was zero, democracy was attacked and voters' right to exercise franchise freely was taken away and elections were held." has been turned into a farce.

He said, "The results are different. One thing is clear, 60 per cent voters did not vote for BJP. Anti-BJP votes got divided. Many things happened. People have started saying who helped BJP to come back to power. "

It is very clear, but I do not like to name any party.

Let us tell you that in the recently held Tripura Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has returned to power by securing an absolute majority.

According to the Election Commission of India, the BJP won 32 seats with a vote share of around 39 percent.

Tipra Motha Party came second by winning 13 seats.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) got 11 seats while the Congress got three seats.

The Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) managed to open its account by winning one seat.

This time the CPI(M) in the Northeast and the Congress, arch-rivals in Kerala, came together to oust the BJP from power.

The combined vote share of the CPI(M) and the Congress stood at around 33 per cent. The BJP, which had not won a single seat in Tripura before 2018, came to power in the last election in alliance with the IPFT and has been in power in the border state for 35 years since 1978. The Left Front was evicted.

The BJP contested 55 seats and its ally IPFT six, but both the allies fielded their candidates in Ampinagar constituency in Gomti district. The Left contested 47 and the Congress 13 respectively.

Out of total 47 seats, CPM contested 43 seats while Forward Bloc, Communist Party of India (CPI) and Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) contested one seat each.
