In Cyprus, mass inspections for safe working conditions in construction are starting, which will last four months, announced the Ministry of Social Affairs in Nicosia, BNR reported.

This industry, in which many Bulgarians are employed, is considered the most dangerous to work in the country and has the highest fines imposed in Cyprus for violations.

The most dangerous industry to work in Cyprus is construction

Special targeted inspections of construction sites will take place in March, July, August and September, the Labor Inspectorate specified.

The purpose of the campaign is not only to establish compliance with legal provisions for safe working conditions, but also to encourage the implementation of preventive measures to reduce accidents with workers.

In Cyprus, construction is the sector with a very high risk of accidents and the most serious occupational accidents compared to other economic activities, the labor inspectorate emphasized.

The sector accounts for 40% of all fatal workplace accidents, making construction the number one contributor to the Cypriot economy, according to a study conducted by the Ministry of Social Affairs and the European University of Cyprus for the period 1999-2020.

A construction company was sanctioned with a fine of 38,000 euros, a record for inspections in the country, in 2021, according to the latest annual report of the Ministry of Social Affairs.

Four firms in the industry in Paphos, Limassol and Nicosia were fined a total of €70,000 for unsafe working conditions that led to the death and serious injury of workers in the last three months of last year alone.
